I recieved this letter yesterday in the post, just before I left on holiday.

Hi @Torenaga. That is just the Notice of Allocation, directions order.

Normally you would receive an N271 Notice of Transfer of Proceedings first. That’s the notice saying the claim has been transferred from Northampton to your local court. Then later you would get the N157 with the judge’s directions. But some courts don’t send the N271 if the transfer and allocation happen very close together. Sometimes the file arrives at the local court and the judge immediately issues the N157, and the admin team never bother sending the N271 separately.

This form (the N157) is the court telling you the case is officially on the Small Claims Track. It is not the hearing date. It is not the final timetable. It is just the judge's basic directions about what both sides must do to prepare. The actual hearing date will come later in a separate notice.

Right now, the only things you need to understand are:

• The N157 is not a summons.  
  
• It does not require you to attend anything yet.  
  
• It does not contain any deadlines that expire immediately.  
  
• It is just the judge's instructions for how the case will run.
  

The important deadlines — like when to send documents, witness statements, and the hearing fee (by the Claimant) — all depend on the hearing date. And that date has not been issued yet. So nothing is "ticking" while you're on holiday.

What you should expect next is a separate letter or email from the court giving the actual hearing date and time. That is the one that triggers the real deadlines. When that arrives, you will need to check the directions in the N157 and work backwards from the hearing date.

The main caveat is that this is a claim issued by DCB Legal and I can say with greater than 99% certainty, they will discontinue the claim just before they are required to pay the £27 trial fee, which is usually 4 weeks before the hearing date, which we don't know yet. So, go and enjoy your holiday as it is unlikely that anything else or any other deadlines will be for at least another four to six weeks at least.
